Beginning with Alpinist 39, each issue will contain a postcard sample created by a member of the Alpinist community.

Joe Iurato has been chosen as the first artist whose work will be featured in the Alpinist Artist Series this year. He has been a contributor to Alpinist since Issue 30.

Joe Iurato creates the illusion of shadows and textures through layers of hand-cut stencils and spray paint, a modern adaptation of an old-fashioned printing process.

He signs his works :01, which represents one second. His artist statement reads: "In times of adversity, it only takes a single second to decide you're going to pick yourself up and move forward in a positive direction regardless of the circumstances involved. :01 means never give up. Stay the course. Believe in who you are. Embrace the next challenge and begin a new chapter."

Aside from exhibiting his art in galleries, Joe also paints in the streets. His large-scale public installations and murals are meant to create social commentary and dialogue within communities. His commercial client list includes NFL's Sunday Night Football, the NBA, and Nike to name just a few.

Joe lives in New Jersey with his wife and two children. He paints nearly full-time. He is also a certified Sommelier, writes a wine column for a group of North Jersey newspapers, and conducts classes and tastings regularly.

Joe's been a climber and a voice within the community since 1999.
