Tentbound, waiting out a third storm in Pakistan, Maxime Turgeon began to wonder if he had "surrendered himself to prison out of his own free will." It was 2008--his third trip to the Karakoram in as many years--and he felt trapped by the very expedition that was supposed to liberate him.
Over the next year, Maxime concocted a trip just as grand in scope as Pakistan--yet it began from his front doorstep in Chamonix, France. In August, he biked hundreds of kilometers east to Slovenia and then to Trieste, Italy, soloing seven long alpine routes along the way.
