What inspired you to shift from big mountain climbing to Scottish winter climbing?
The shift came when I became a father. Each mountaineering parent draws their own lines about what, if anything, they'll change about their climbing. For me I couldn't justify long periods of time away, so that meant an end to Himalayan trips. Rather than view that as a problem, I thought I'd use it as a chance to look again at the climbing I had on my doorstep.
Obviously I was inspired by the climbs of Andy Nisbet, Guy Robertson and Dave MacLeod, all futuristic in their own way. But as cheesy as it sounds, the big inspiration has been my daughter. Seeing her starting out on the adventure of life gave me a real kick up the arse to re-look and appreciate the mountaineering we have here in the UK.
