The mountains of Scotland are not the biggest or most sensational peaks on earth. But these "hills" have brought grown men to tears and baffled the most experienced alpinists. One of them is Ian Parnell, whose time in the greater ranges has only encouraged his appreciation for Scotland's quirky nooks of frozen moss. While peaks like Beinn Eighe (3,313') might be relatively small, they're not to be taken lightly. Parnell explains in "All That Is Gold" in Alpinist 31: "A day spent scratching up a mere 300 feet of ascent in Scotland can equal a week on bigger routes and higher mountains." Click here for an interview with Ian on the unique appeal of Scottish winter climbing. |
