Backcountry's alpine issue is on sale now.

His father had an expensive Canon F1 camera that he was not allowed to touch, and his childhood home had a darkroom. Photography, it seems, has always been in Andrew Querner’s blood.

Andrew began shooting photos in 1998, when he and a college friend decided to capture their cragging adventures. Thousands of rolls of film later, Andrew is now one of climbing's most revered--and unique--photographers. He ventures into the misty alpine where, without ever posing his subjects, he captures the raw essence of those who enter what he calls the "desolate arena."

"Shelter from the Storm" is a 10-page collection of Andrew's work featured in Alpinist 29. Click here to see more images from that essay and to learn how the above photograph forever changed Andrew's life.
