Production Intern Alpinist Magazine is now accepting applications for four four-month internships available throughout the year. The interns gain hands-on experience in many aspects of magazine production, doing tasks from gritty to glamorous. Alpinist is an archival-quality climbing journal produced by a dedicated group that balances the necessities of business acumen with the spirit of alpinism. Because of Alpinist's small staff, our interns play an important role behind the scenes as well as in the development of every issue. The internship provides an excellent opportunity to experience many facets of magazine publishing in a progressive, cause-oriented environment. The work is unpaid with a 30- to 40-hour workweek. Ideally, the internship would begin each season (May 1, September 1, January 1), with a three- to four-month duration, but some flexibility with schedules can be accommodated. Location is the Alpinist World Headquarters, in Jackson, Wyoming.
Responsibilities The best candidates will have had some publishing experience before applying, such as a prior internship with a newspaper or magazine. Dan Long The Alpinist Marketing Intern helps design more efficient circulation systems, analyze our supply chain, and engineer alliances with peers and not-for-profits in the Outdoor Industry. Sherri Gronli The Alpinist Advertising Intern assists the Advertising Director with client communication, client prospecting and ad-package creation. Individuals participating in this internship will gain signficant, hands-on experience with top-tier brands as they help develop advertising strategy for our print and web components. Responsibilities: A genuine interest in advertising, marketing and the business side of publishing is required. Candidates should have strong communication skills and a preexisting knowledge of web, film and electronic media. Candidates should be analytical, creative, detail oriented, high-energy and able to climb 5.10 or harder while wearing a pack and singing lyrics to Bjork songs in the original Icelandic. Julie Linahan The Alpinist Online Editorial Intern aids in the development of Alpinist.com by sourcing and producing the site's featured content while maintaining Alpinist's integrity and style. Although the intern's daily responsibilities vary widely--from the glamorous (writing and editing is involved for those qualified) to the mundane (expect to number-crunch and sift through code from time to time)--the intern's work plays a crucial role in keeping the site current with the finest content in climbing's electronic sphere.
Responsibilities: The best candidates will have an aptitude for project management, a good handle on both Macs and PCs, and--most importantly--a genuine interest in the development and overall success of Alpinist.com. Applicants should have some publishing experience and a passion for climbing. Alpinist's Online Editor will work closely with the intern to harness and mature his or her strengths and skill sets.
