Boreal Fires The first time British climber Jerry Moffatt saw a pair of sticky-rubber rock boots—the Boreal Fires (pronounced fee-rays)—was also the first time he met John Bachar: 1983. "I was at Joshua Tree, and

we were just roping up to climb a 5.11d crack when Bachar strolled up, topless and wearing his white karate pants," Moffatt recalls.
