In the spring of 2002, Christian Beckworth wrote me, “We’re launching this new magazine ‘Alpinist’ at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Show.” So I did what I thought was best: I offered to promote the rag by walking around the show on thirty-inch stilts clad in a bright-purple one-piece ski suit and a sparkly clown hat. “Great idea,” replied Christian.
